Do I really need an attorney specializing in Virginia appeals?
It depends on your trial attorney’s comfort level and how important your case is. Just like doctors, there are general practitioners and then there are specialists. Sometimes circumstances warrant going to a specialist to make sure that you are getting the best possible outcome.
Virginia appeals lawyers are familiar with the practices of the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Virginia, and tend to be known by the judges and justices of the Courts. Because appellate lawyers are already familiar with appeals, they are able to get to the heart of the issue efficiently, saving their clients time and money in the process.
How much does an appellate specialist cost?
A lawyer’s favorite answer is “it depends” and for a good reason! Each case is different. Because specialists are familiar with the Courts and the rules, sometimes appellate counsel can be more cost-effective.
I generally offer services on a flat-fee basis, meaning clients know at the outset exactly how much I charge for my services so there are no surprises. For consulting clients, I charge a reasonable hourly rate.
What cases does your firm take?
I do appeals only. I specialize in cases of all subject matters in the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court, but will occasionally handle appellate matters in other courts pursuant to the Administrative Process Act (“APA”).
Do you only work on appeals in the Richmond area?
My practice is structured to allow me to handle appeals for clients statewide: from Southwest Virginia (where I grew up) to Northern Virginia and tidewater.
